The MtDNA is passed from females to both their male and female siblings. Males do not pass on the MtDNA to their offspring. The fact the copies of MtDNA are handed down unchanged from mother to daughter or son means that it is a reliable means of determining maternal lineage.
Analysts take the MtDNA from the samples provided and create an X-SV profile for each individual; comparison of these profiles between individuals will enable analysts to determine if the interested parties do in fact have a common maternal line.
