An STR analysis DNA test is carried out when two persons want to find out if they are brother and sister in cases where it is not possible to carry out a straightforward maternity or paternity test. In addition, this test enables siblings to establish the degree to which they are related, i.e. whether they are full siblings or half siblings.
The STR test works by analyzing specific areas on the chromosome called genetic loci from each potential sibling and comparing these loci to locate common genetic material. Persons who are related will share common genetic material inherited from the parent or parents they have in common. Therefore full siblings will have a high degree of genetic material in common, half siblings will have less genetic material in common and unrelated persons will have no genetic material in common. Therefore this test will allow two people to establish whether they have two parents in common, one parent or no parents in common, according to the amount of DNA that is found to matching between the two samples.
Since the test seeks to establish common DNA between siblings and their parents, we always suggest trying to send in a DNA sample of any parent available for testing. This will help us clarify further the genetic inheritance patterns passed on from parents to siblings. Please note that if the siblings are of the same sex it may be simpler to perform alternative tests. If the siblings are females and have different mothers, then we would recommend you perform an X chromosome test whilst if the siblings are male then we recommend you order a Y chromosome test. You can order your STR analysis test for two persons for only $589.00.
